Identi.ca Launches, an Open Source Twitter
Source : Ross Mayfield's Weblog
Evan Prodromou, one of the better citizens of the wiki community and founder of Wiki Travel, launched Identi.ca today. Its a Twitter clone that is also distributed as Open Source licensed software. I've been playing with it in semi-private beta. Its made Dave Winer's day and Jevon is Canadian [..]

Wiki Universal Edit Button
Source : Ross Mayfield's Weblog
Yesterday at Supernova's Liquid Conversations panel I asked what people were doing to make a better and more usable user experience across tools. There wasn't much of an answer. Today, UniversalEditButton.org was launched. Pete Kaminksi, my co-founder and CTO blogged about it: [..]

Supernova: The Publius Project, The Internet's Constitutional Moments
Source : Ross Mayfield's Weblog
I'm at my favorite conference today, Supernova. At the first one we were inspired to found Socialtext. Instead of going to the VC or consumer web panels, I thought I'd learn a bit about a Berkman project. Here's an impressionary transcript [..]

Millennial Backlash
Source : Ross Mayfield's Weblog
Larry Dignan has a classic rant on how Millennials will run into a wall when they go to work and confront Six Sigma and enterprise IT. Funny, and its a good sanity check, but nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition, we live in a complex world my friends, and this demographic shift shouldn't be underestimated [..]

Wiki + Spreadsheet = SocialCalc
Source : Ross Mayfield's Weblog
When I co-founded Socialtext over five years ago, the insight was that tools emerging on the consumer web had better social dynamics than enterprise software, were a fun way to get things done and could be adapted to the context of an organization. I'm proud to finally see our partnership with Dan Bricklin come to fruition (see his post, and the history of the project) -- and the result is something truly new and solves real distributed multi-group collaboration problems.
Many at the conference told me Social Calc was the best thing they saw, one said finally, a real Enterprise 2.0 application. I'm not afraid of overstating the difference and potential of Social Calc:
Most people play email volleyball with Excel attachments, spreadsheet hell, where its hard to work off of the latest version and error rates are as high as 90%. Recently, web spreadsheets have turned it into tetherball, but they largely are reimplementing a single worksheet on a single webpage [..]

Enterprise 2.008
Source : Ross Mayfield's Weblog
Interesting times at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston this week. The conference has become the core of our little but growing industry. Recall if you will that it started as the Collaborative Technologies Conference in 2005, when organizer Jen Pahlka noted in the kickoff: Interop is the genesis of this conference, even the first shows had a [..]

Elevating the Enterprise 2.0 Conversation
Source : Ross Mayfield's Weblog
My presentation at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference... | View | Upload your own Abstract: The past five years have held tremendous innovation in enterprise software, an industry not known for its innovation relative to other areas of the technology sector. Enterprise 2.0 has challenged preconceptions and created innovative products. But of more interest, the use cases have evolved and practices are enabling new solutions that offer competitive advantage. Its time to elevate the conversation beyond features (wiki, blog, RSS, social networking, etc.), put aside the hype and talk about what problems the Enteprise 2.0 community is uniquely prepared to solve. In this keynote, Socialtext Chairman, President & Co-founder Ross Mayfield will share his insights from the past five years in business, and look to the next.
